We are a young, innovative and vibrant winery in the Ribera del Duero. We are fascinated by the world of wine and the possibility of trying new things. For this reason Martin Berdugo is a winery for daring people, who are willing to take chances; our wines express the nature and individuality of the fruit of our vines, using the latest technologies while all the time respecting the traditional methods.
Our buildings are at the forefront of modern winery architecture in the Ribera del Duero. In 2005 the design, by the architects Vicky Daroca and Maria Vine, was awarded the prize for the best European design in the construction category, by the prestigious German magazine Bauwet.
Our Winemaking
We are obssessed by our vines, we know that the only way to make high quality wines is to take care of and manage the vineyard during the whole year. All of our wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in our own vineyards.
In addition to the dry pruning done during the winter, we also do a strict green pruning and a cluster reduction, which makes our production way below the maximum limits permitted by the Consejo Regulador of the Ribera del Duero. This ensures higher quality fruit, which in turn ensures higher quality wine.
Just prior to the harvest we decide the quality and style of grapes by zone, so that we can select the appropriate grapes for each type of wine.
Our grapes are picked manually allowing us to choose the clusters we want to use. The fact that the winery is located within the vineyard guarantees that the grapes are in perfect condition when the are received.
The must is fermented in stainless steel vats, in a temperature controlled environment, using yeasts which occur naturally in the grapes. These yeasts ensure that each wine has its own character and individuality.
History
Bodega y Vinedos Martin Berdugo is a family run winery in Aranda de Duero, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero. Our story starts in 1990 when we decided to set off on our viticultural journey. This journey is our illusion and dream to give a new meaning to the family land which holds so many family memories and sentiments.
It was then, trusting in the great potential of the newly formed DO Ribera del Duero, that Josefina Martin Berdugo decided to plant the vines, where they had been planted for over two hundred years by her ancestors. This decision was made with the support and collaboration of her husband Enrique and three children Antonio, Bruno and Pepa. The first harvests of these "grapes of hope" were sold to other wineries in the Ribera del Duero, until finally in 2000, we built the winery and we started on our own journey in the exciting world of producing and selling Martin Berdugo.
